Our goal this year is to raise $60,000 to support the mission of our local chapter. This will not be an easy task, given the status of our national economic situation; That is why all of you, as Red Cross volunteers, will be important…”We need you!”

As chairman of the 2009 Heroes campaign, it is my intent to provide a weekly report on the progress we are making towards reaching our goal. This report will also include community updates of events or activities involving the Red Cross, and list any problem areas or concerns that need to be expressed.

I again thank you for your support in this campaign. Remember: “Ask everyone you know to help give whatever they can contribute.” Thank you!

At our annual board retreat on Jan. 24th, 2009 Heroes Chairman, Lindsey Smith told the board members assembled that he believes in the Red Cross mission. Lindsey wants to match or surpass last year’s campaign goal by going to every segment of the community and talking about how the Red Cross helps people in times of desperate need. Said Lindsey, “The Red Cross has a long and proud history of serving Americans in desperate need as well as foreign countries in crisis when disasters strike. Regardless of where the need may be, when people are in despair, the Red Cross symbol alone has always provided a sense of comfort and hope that has let them know that we are here to help.”

With our kick off breakfast more than a month away, we already have Red Cross supporters stepping up to be Heroes this year, thirty-two to be exact. We need to recruit at least 80-90 Heroes to have a successful campaign, especially in these tough economic times, because not everyone may be able to meet their goal of raising $1,000 or more.

Our publicity plan is well underway. The morning of the kick-off breakfast,Mar. 10, we’ll have our full-page ad in area newspapers to announce our Heroes who’ve already pledged their support. Tony Kale, morning drive time DJ at WCLS 97.7, will do a live radio interview with Lindsey and Sue the morning of the kickoff to help launch the campaign during “March is Red Cross month.” They will both be doing radio shows throughout the month of March, and Red Cross flags will fly at 35-40 area businesses to raise awareness of the value and history of the Red Cross in our community.

Sue Gulley sent an invitation this week to last year’s Heroes to let them know about all the marketing tools that we’ll make available to them to raise funds for the Red Cross. Marketing folders, posters, stickers that announce “I gave to the Red Cross,” five large banners, Red Cross squares, and donation canisters are the tools to use to do grass roots fund raising. This year we have added “Chipin,” an online donation web page that Heroes can use to direct friends and family to help them with their cause. Another great tool is simple letters to family and friends. This is being used by Pat Kingsbury, Jane Laughlin, Lindsey Smith, Eric Baker and the IU Red Cross executive club members. Any team captain or Hero who is recruiting others to join the campaign can also use one of our marketing folders when visiting with potential Heroes or contributors.

Heroes who’ve pledged their support for the campaign as of Feb. 6, 2009:

1 Eric Baker, President, IU Red Cross Club
2 Tim Brown, Bloomington Hospital
3 Mark Conlin, Zanko’s Little Zagreb
4 Marcus Debro, Bloomington High School North, Board Chair
5 Sandy DeWeese, So. A full-page Heroes ad featuring all those who pledged to raise or give $1,000 was in the local newspaper the morning of the breakfast. Campaign chair and Red Cross Chapter Board member Jeremiah Young, owner of Nature’s Way, Inc. shared his personal story about the American Red Cross. Jeremiah cited an experience he had with an employee whose family home burned to the ground who was helped by our chapter disaster volunteers, who she called “angels.” Said Jeremiah, “This is about people helping people,” urging everyone to get involved with the Chapter staff and volunteers who help people when they are at their worst moments in life.

This year’s Heroes campaign was only the second one conducted by the Monroe County Red Cross Chapter, but several unique and creative ideas were launched to make the campaign outstanding. A Heroes blog was created http://redcrossheroes.blogspot.com/ that was updated every day with the total receipts and also announcements about special Heroes events that supporters could attend or participate in. The blog included links to the chapter website as well as to one individual Hero’s website who was raising funds online using “ChipIn,” a free software program. One of our Heroes had a plant sale at his landscape business which resulted in $4,000 being raised in a single day. A firefighter boot drive was held in a small town that raised $3,781 at two intersections. Six different volunteer firefighter companies participated in the boot drive. For the first time we had three middle schools and one high school participate by conducting Heroes campaigns. One middle school raised $1,200 in their coin drive! Chapter executive Sue Gulley stated, "From our first campaign to our second, the most astounding change was the growth in grass roots fund raising. The first year we raised $28,900, and the second year we raised $70,000, largely due to individuals rolling up their sleeves and raising more than their $1,000 goal.”

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.

►Owen County Volunteer Firefighters to Conduct Boot Drive for Red Cross on April 5th

The Owen County Volunteer Firefighters will be holding a boot drive on Saturday, April 5 from 8 am – 2 pm at two major intersections in Spencer. We’ve reached 57% of our goal in donations for which we are so grateful. Most people in our community don’t realize that we receive no federal or state funding to provide the disaster response and emergency preparedness services to residents in Monroe and Owen Counties. Every year we must raise the monies it takes to be ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year…to relay emergency communications to military members all over the globe, or to go to the scene of a home fire and provide on-the-spot emergency assistance to a family who would otherwise have nowhere to turn to in the middle of the night.

We have a total of 62 individuals, businesses, clubs, and organizations that committed their resources to raise funds for the American Red Cross mission services by running their own Heroes campaign or giving individually. Each one of you who GIVES BIG is our Hero, and we are so thankful for your generosity.

Don’t forget to mark the date of Tuesday, April 15th, at Noon, to come to our 2008 Heroes for the American Red Cross Celebration Luncheon at the Radisson Hotel. We have some great surprises for our Heroes and I assure you it will be a memorable hour well worth your time.

Support the American Red Cross Club at IU Heroes Campaign

Tuesday, March 25th beginning at 6:00 pm the American Red Cross Club of IU will be having a Poker Tournament to raise money for the Heroes Campaign. This is the third week of our Heroes campaign, and there are a couple of events on the calendar this week. On Tuesday the 18th I’ll be at a taping of a radio show on WGCL AM1370 to talk about the American Red Cross during National Red Cross month. Don Creek and Loni White from the Red Cross River Valley Blood Services Division will join me. Unfortunately, in our area we suffer critical blood shortages as the rule rather than the exception. If you haven’t donated blood in awhile, go to Givebloodnow.org, and type in your zip code to see where the next blood drive is being held, or go to the Bloomington blood donor site on 1600 West 3rd Street. This one action you can take in giving blood can save up to three lives- what an opportunity!

According to our calendar, Dodd’s House at Wright Quad will hold its Heroes couch-a-thon on Wed., March 19th so if you are in the area, stop by and drop your donation into the donation canister during their event. Thanks to Brent Postleweight for his work on organizing this event!

From Sue Gulley:

Congratulations to Pat Kingsbury and Karen Mikesell, who are Book Fair volunteer leaders, board members, and Heroes for the American Red Cross as well. Their Heroes campaign got a huge boost yesterday when we received a check for $1,000 from a donor who responded to their “Family & Friends” letter sent in the beginning of March. That one gift sent them well over their goal of $1,000 each to raise in support the disaster relief and emergency preparedness work of our local chapter. Well done, ladies, and thank you so much!

We hope our Heroes in Monroe and Owen Counties will feel free to post comments about their own campaigns on this blog—we are anxious to know how your campaigns are doing!

A Fundraising Idea for Your Campaign

Bloom Marketing Group has set a goal of $2000 for their Heroes Camapign fundraiser.
